Special Topics in Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications


COURSE DESCRIPTION:

WECM Course description:

Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency.

TSTC Waco Expanded Course Description:

The student will work with others to construct a miniature supercomputer. Students will improve current documentation, and prepare a video presentation about supercomputing. Students may be assigned various tasks dependent upon their level of understanding related to TSTC's supercomputing center.

Learning outcomes/objectives are determined by local occupaional need and business and industry trends.

TSTC Waco Expanded Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the principles of parallel computing and supercomputing
  2. Install Linux on a computer
  3. Install and configure various network services used in clustering
  4. Construct a computational cluster
  5. Work in a team environment
  6. Prepare and make a presentation

COURSE ASSESSMENT:

Video Presentation: Each student will prepare a 5-10 minute presentation and record the presentation regarding supercomputing and their experience in this course.

Grading:

Grading is based upon missed days and the video presentation. A student is counted absent if they have missed more than 30 minutes of a scheduled meeting. For each day missed, the student's grade will be reduced one letter grade. The video presentation is worth 40% of the final grade.

Mobile Devices:

 Mobile device use by students while in class is prohibited!  Only instructors are allowed to use mobile devices in class.  Students must turn them off or set them to silent.  Students are not allowed to answer calls, make calls, or send text messages during class.  Students using phones during class will be asked to leave and given a zero for all work scheduled for that day (including tests).  For emergency situations, students may be contacted through the CNS Reception Desk at 867-4831.  Please let whoever is calling know which class you are in and the name of your instructor.  Personnel manning the reception desk will contact the instructor of your class so they can let you know about the nature of the emergency and develop a plan of action.
